Hermann Schlimme

 

Biografia

Hermann Schlimme studied Architecture (with focus on History of Architecture and Building Preservation), History and Art History at the Universities of Braunschweig, Edmonton and Florence. He graduated in Architecture at the Technische Universität Braunschweig in 1994. In 1991, he was awarded the Johannes-Göderitz-Prize, which was granted for building in the new regions of Germany; in 1994-95 Hermann Schlimme participated as a Scientific collaborator on the project concerning the Documentation of Synagogues in Lower Saxony. He was admitted to the Graduate Fellowship Programme of the Region of Lower Saxony (Germany) in 1995. As a Teaching Assistant (wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) at the Technische Universität Braunschweig from 1996-98, Hermann Schlimme also co-organized the exhibition High-rise projects for Breslau/Wrocław 1919-1932; and he received his Dr.-Ing. Degree in the History of Architecture (PhD) in 1998. His thesis dealt with the early modern church façade in Rome and was directed by Prof. Dr. Harmen Thies.

Hermann Schlimme has worked as a Researcher (Resident Scholar) at the Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome, since 1998. In 2001, he was awarded a Society of Architectural Historians Fellowship. He is currently involved in the design of web-research-environments for the Humanities and is conducting research within the project Epistemic History of Architecture (in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin), coordinating the project for the Bibliotheca Hertziana. Hermann Schlimme edited the book Practice and Science in Early Modern Italian Building. Towards an Epistemic History of Architecture (Electa, Milano 2006) and was awarded the Edoardo Benvenuto Prize for his research in 2006. He also works as a part-time Lecturer at the Technische Universität, Vienna, since 2006. He served as member of the Scientific Committee of the Second International Congress on Construction History, Cambridge 2006, and he will also participate at the Scientific Committee of the Third International Congress on Construction History, Cottbus 2009. Hermann Schlimme acts as Corresponding Member for Italy for the Construction History Society since 2007.
